It's hot

11 May 08 | 06:54pm | [info]stsquad_real

The weather is proving to be lovely and warm this weekend. A lot of outdoor activities have been involved combined with an appropriate amount of thirst quenching. Saturday saw us undertake a moderate walk followed by a pub lunch. Sunday has so far involved cycling into Cambridge for flume related frolics before coming home to a lovely BBQ chicken Sunday Lunch.

We popped out to the pub after lunch to watch the dying embers of the premier league but much as I tried to muster up chanting for Wigan in their match against united I still couldn't find it in my heart to cheer against Bolton's valiant show against the ruskiesChelsea. I'm sure I'll asked to endure the Champions league game in a week or so but it's not so bad following this football malarky, they generally seem to server beer in the places you can watch it.

I've only had a passing eye on the weeks geek news but I did notice slashdot talking about Microsoft's latest censoring of IM conversations. Having said that I'm not sure I can have full confidence in any of the IM service providers. Luckily if you keep away from the official clients you can ensure that what conversation happens between you stays that way. It pays to be paranoid some times ;-)

Hallucinogens

11 May 08 | 06:08pm | [info]bacony

Today I wasn't feeling much better. Ant offered me some of the painkillers he had left over from when he had surgery, because even the unholy alliance of paracetamol and ibuprofen was not touching the pain. As a consequence, I took some seriously good hallucinogenic opiates. That was not the best possible time to watch Mr Fortune's copy of 'Zardoz' for the first time.

Vince and Ant and Andy went forth to Ikea to buy some more shelves, because our house is suffering from way too much stuff, and way too little storage space. I asked Vince if he'd be kind enough to pick me up some candy, because I was feeling generally sulky.
Not long after they returned, Vince came into the living room holding something behind his back.
"I bought you some candy" he told me, "but first you must defeat the monster that guards it, in single combat!". Then he waved a giant stuffed cuddly woodlouse at me, and inside its zippered mouth were the delicious sweets. When I asked him why he bought me a huge cuddly woodlouse, he told me "What else do you bring a woman on powerful hallucinogens?". I love that man. He has a very evil sense of humour...

Back from Jersey

11 May 08 | 02:19pm | [info]suziehill

Had a fantastic time, loads of pictures for just 6 days, will post on Flickr once I can get through them all.  If you get a chance to go, it's well worth a visit.  Try and avoid July and August as this is high season and its manic from all accounts.  May was just right, great weather, hardly any tourists, extremely nice locals and the driving is so polite.  There are plenty of long beaches and places to visit and we even got sunburnt!

On another note, I've been published.  Since I put up most of my photo's on Flickr this opens them up to the general world and so far I've had a number of requests:

Picture.com - my best moon shot to date, which will be included in the Endless Journeys book produced by Picture.com.

nowpublic.com - if you click on marcus_and_sue on the right or the 62 more shots at the bottom, I'm in there.  Not my best shots, as my camera was an old one without much zoom.

Schmap Italy - One of my shots from Verona Arena

Schmap East Coast - One of my shots from Baltimore

I've had loads more added to admin groups on Flickr, even one for "I love steaks"

Seems I'm not that bad at photography!

Dearest LJ friends, I need your help.

Any idea where I can get a flamenco skirt (or a pattern for one that's easy to make) really chesap, and preferably before 2 weeks today (as that's when I'll need it for).

I am going to a Eurovision party as Spain, not taking up another dance class.

Coffee, Cake and Kink

10 May 08 | 11:49pm | [info]m31andy

location: Bed
music: Adagio for Strings, Samuel Barber
On a whim (and on the advice of the lovely [info]cuvalwen) I hauled my big arse down to Coffee, Cake and Kink in Covent Garden tonight. I was promised an evening of erotica readings, including Knitting Porn. As the latter combines two of my greatest loves (though a couple of pressure vessels and a balance sheet in there and you can stick a fork in me, I'm done) it really had to be done.

And it didn't disappoint at all. The coffee was lovely, the cake was marvellous (though still a little rough on my poor sore throat) and the erotica really good. The knitting porn didn't disappoint either, combined as it was with rather amusing puns and quite startling uses of knitted scarves and balls of wool.

It happens once a month, apparently. I may just have to mosey on down again sometime.

Bonus plus, I got pipped at by a tube driver on the way home. Which was nice. Though it could've been the same tube driver I snogged between South Kensington and Gloucester Road many years ago. Which was also nice.

At Arm’s Length

10 May 08 | 11:29pm | [info]lordofmisrule

I’m coping with the ‘heat’ by sitting in my pants and drinking Zubrowka with apple juice. Not that I need an excuse for either of those things. And the temperature has been rather comfortable today. Except when I decided to take the 25 bus home. Now my issue with bendy buses is how stuffy they get and that they don’t run enough of them on busy routes after midnight. In the world according to Boris Johnson they started World War II, are responsible for the Rwandan genocide (dead picaninnies!) and the repealing of Section 28. However if anyone has any real reason why we should get rid of them (at great expense to the taxpayer) please let me know.

Last night I went out to celebrate the destruction of Adam’s liver at a bar in Farringdon. I had lots of fun, didn’t buy a single drink (thank fuck. £8 for a gin and tonic!) and ended up staying much later than I anticipated. I ended up flirting with a friend who I thought liked me and we agreed to meet for coffee today but it didn’t happen. Woe, rejection, despair. Etc. I’ll live.

So instead today I went to the Idea Store at Whitechapel to return some ideas I’d borrowed. Yeah, I hate that concept. It’s a fucking library, and the old Whitechapel public library was a rather admirable piece of Victorian architecture. The only reason people go to the Idea Store is to use the computers there, and you can just open a community computer centre for that. *grumble, grumble* Anyway, I lunched in Whitechapel, walked to Spitalfields. Again. And I bet I’ll be there again tomorrow for the market. I’d yell “what’s the appeal?!” but it has nice coffee shops, nice pubs, quirky shops, good restaurants and food outlets and is a nice mix of old and new. I ended up chatting to a Socialist Workers Party activist there about the BNP. I signed their petition (for all the good it will do) and bought a copy of the Socialist Worker. I read it and I see where they’re coming from but they’re a bit too much of a hard swerve to the left for me. And a bit too self righteous. From the City I walked to the West End and went into the British Museum to browse the Stuff™ and then headed home for a siesta. I was supposed to go meet gays in Retro this evening but failed. And then tried to organise pubbage elsewhere with other gays but failed on that account. So I’ve defaulted to Zubrowka. And Grey’s Anatomy. And Battlestar Galactica. And my pants.

New Who 4.6, The Doctor's Daughter

10 May 08 | 08:52pm | [info]purple_pen

Given that I'd expected this episode to be abysmally bad, I'm glad to say I was able to be pleasantly surprised when it in fact turned out to be merely pretty lame.

It had some corking concepts )

So what went so wrong? )

Still, it's over, and we can get on with looking ahead to the rest of the series. The next three episodes have every reason to be fabulous, and then we're into RTD-scripted territory for the run-up to the finale. So what new clues has this episode given us for the end of the season?

Speculation )

Anyway, for the moment, I am off to watch Horror of Fang Rock. Because I can!

Woe and Wee.

10 May 08 | 05:29pm | [info]bacony

I should be at Chris's party right now. I should be drinking and eating and having a good time. Instead I am typing, trying to take my mind off the pain. Stupid stupid chronic bladder condition has decided that I won't be going five minutes away from a toilet for the rest of this weekend, and that I should be good and ouchy as well.
Vince is being lovely, and has gone to buy me painkillers. He's been saying nice comforting things and petting my head. I in turn have been snapping and swearing at him because I dislike pain, and I hate missing a fun party in order to be ill.
Grr. I would like a new bladder please, one that knows its place.

Luckily the parcel that Andy had in the post was my copy of the pearls that were his eyes. I can at least have fun reading, even if it is likely to be in the bathroom...

  • El Reg shifted the feed BOFH was on (again) and I hadn't noticed. Been in this sort of meeting a few times, in such a discussion, backing up the MD or the tech, the tech wins. Every time. ([info]reg_bofh is new syndication account BTW)
  • Sparkle has a job interview, and could do with the help of People of Faith, so, y'know go help her (it's a good job): I need to do a short presentation (as if it were to the local Church Council) entitled Teenagers: Faith in a Materialistic Age.
ETA: the last link doesn't need to be just for those who believe—lack of faith is as relevent I think.

So we can finally get dabs off skin.

Except, I thought that the practice was fairly well established, if you get to the body within twenty minutes of being touched.

Hmm. Interesting.

A bit overcast, but since it looks like it is in fact, Barbeque Weather, I transfer my plans from tentative to definitive.

Barbeque, our house, tonight from seven. Bring booze, whatever you wish to be incinerated, etc.

Now to work and wait for the enjoyable time when I get to set fire to things ^_^ *sigh*
