One of the many blogs I subscribe to is Matthew Perpetua's Pop Songs 08. Each post is about a different song from R.E.M.'s extensive back-catalogue. R.E.M. have for many years been one of my favourite artists, and I have every album and practically every non-album track on CD. I don't always agree with the blog, but it's often a good read, and the concept's sound.

Imagine my delight to discover that there's now a similar blog for another of my favourite gotta-have-them-all artists, Juliana Hatfield - only written by the singer/songwriter herself!
An Arm and a Leg has so far covered three songs, including the song for My So-Called Life and her appearance in it (which contains spoilers for anyone thinking of borrowing my box-set). Naturally these posts drift into covering other things like the rituals that keep her "sane in the absence of a 9-to-5 job" and why she doesn't have a dishwasher (a trait more adorable in someone I'm not trying to live with). It brightened up my lunch hour, anyway. These are based on requests, so if you see me running another JH/BB/SG marathon on my Last.fm scrobbling it'll probably be me picking one to ask for these 21st-century liner notes on...

Have you heard Accelerate yet? Clasic R.E.M.? It has the sound of Document or Pageant, but filtered through Monster and New Adventures...
I'm ambivalent. I still like R.E.M. but i feel they're past their prime, which is sad.

Never really got into Juliana Hatfield. I owned a couple of her albums, and felt i should like her because i like Lemonheads, Belly, Throwing Muses, Breeders, Veruca Salt etc but she always just seemed a bit too spoilt middle class college girl for me.
And the whole virgin thing was over hyped in the the mid 90's.
Always seemed odd to me - she smoked, drank, maybe did drugs, but didn't have sex. Odd moral choice, to my teenaged mind.

Yes, I've heard Accelerate, and I also own it. The two did not coincide; I felt a lot happier splashing out at HMV on the +DVD edition (that Amazon had failed me on) knowing that I really liked it.

Booklet has all the lyrics in, which is of course substantially different to the early works. So, it's the early energy but with more confident vocals... yet by now they've largely said all they're going to say.

Re JH... perhaps illogical spoilt middle-class college girls are my type. My chief complaint with her is she's too skinny. I probably prefer the post-getting-some stuff.

I never really got into Throwing Muses even though it would seem logical.

You should check out the two Some Girls albums (be careful, there's a male group with the same name) and the most recent Blake Babies album; not only are these more accessible and spouse-friendly but the group dynamic helps dilute the parts of the solo work that you may have had trouble with.

On the other side of the coin, Evan Dando's *solo* album is one of my favourite albums of all time.

What I haven't heard yet is the fourth Breeders album (although I don't play the third one much), I suppose I should get round to it.

When you say 'fourth' breeders album, what do you mean?

Sqeeeee! I was unaware.

I enjoyed the Amps album more than Title TK.

Have you heard any of the Kelly Deal 6000? I have both. The second album was in my top 5 for ages.

And, yes, it does make sense for you to like Throwing Muses. Sort it out.

The wife and I always meant to listen to 'baby i'm bored' but never actually did.

Yeah, we both need to stay a bit more aware of these things; the Breeders played Academy 2 two days ago.

Kelly Deal 6000.. I have the first album, plus the singles for Canyon and Brillo Hunt.. but not the second album.

I'm hazy about what I actually have of the Amps (probably single + album), but I think I do like it more than Title TK. I have the single from circa TK that has their cover of Theme To Buffy. It's a bit pointless, and messes with my head - much like finding out people I've not known since college are Whedon fans.

Evan Dando: I'm torn between the album version of Shots Is Fired and the b-side version that features Liv Tyler. I saw today that there's a "collector's edition" of ~Ray out which adds a load of acoustic versions plus a DVD. Plus (compared to my edition) Mrs Robinson.

When I've finished ripping everything (600+ CDs remain) I'm going to work out where the gaps are, and maybe compare notes.
