location: Plas Roald Dahl, far away in time.
I enjoyed Torchwood, but more in the way that I might enjoy a particularly good fanfic rather than the level I might appreciate a piece of original sci-fi action drama. The presence of James Marsters only made me remember that I should probably go pick up the next issue of the official Angel continuation After The Fall, which also contains a fish character and is generally an unfair comparison to Torchwood. Spike also appeared within the pages of Buffy Season 8 which is also unworthy of the faint praise of Better Than Torchwood.

Thankfully I can point to one recent season premiere that was more predictable, self-aware, shark-jumping and Barrowman-worshipping - BBC Three's Two Pints Of Lager. But that was quite enjoyable too. At least Torchwood included one interesting science fiction concept - "murder rehab".

Plus, it was nice to see Doctor-Who-Jack instead of Torchwood-Season-One-Jack. And if they'd only injected the DNA into the device rather than the heart, it would have made substantially more sense although quite how... I'll stop. It's a show that's best left unquestioned, really.

Torchwood 2x01 deserves an award for "Best V-Formation Walking". This is why they need Jack! It's particularly impressive when they reverse direction.

I really enjoyed the new Torchwood ep but yes I agree it is rather more like watching fanfic than genuine sci-fi. However, I don't have a problem with that. All I ask is to be entertained. Luckily, two men snogging then beating the crap out of each other really does entertain me!
It probably also helps that I worship John Barrowman. So much so that my friend Samantha and I are going to see him in panto this Sunday. Yes, pantomime. We don't even like panto! *cough*fangirls*cough*

As for Murder Rehab: is it really a sci-fi concept or social commentry? After all, our prisons are too full - let's send everyone to Murder Rehab instead! It obviously works...

My word you're even going to BIRMINGHAM! That's dedication. Website for it looks funky tho'. Please let me know how they crowbar Daleks into the Aladdin plot.

Do you own "Shark Attack 3: Megalodon"? I was unaware of this JB-starrer until I saw the panto biog. ukbatmanfan22 calls it one of the worst shark films he has ever seen. I have no idea how many shark films he/she's seen, so I'd like to make my own mind up.

Oh, and I wouldn't really separate social commentary from sci-fi; Jack's reaction to Murder Rehab seemed to trivialise murder, and certainly it's as sci-fi as A Clockwork Orange. But I guess Torchwood is "escapist sci-fi". Plenty to work on icon-wise, I suppose?

Guess what!? I got to meet Mr Barrowman. In the flesh! There is photographic evidence and everything! This and how Daleks are crowbarred into Aladdin can be found in my latest entry (as of writing this post) at [info]pkgem_fanart. There's no fanart this time just squee!

I don't own "Shark Attack 3: Megalodon"... yet. I heard about this film the other year but forgot to add it to my Amazon wishlist. Then I forgot its name. Now you have reminded me I have added it to my list. I will no doubt purchase it some time this year and will then lend it to you. It only comes in region 1 though.

I'll catch Torchwood on the old demand service (probably tonight), I was intrigued by the addition of James Marsters - we shall see :)

We also caught the Two Pints episode (we've been fans for a while). I had no idea that Ralph Little was leaving the series and was impressed with how they handled it (especially the live "tricks" and the blantant referencing to shark-jumping when lead characters leave). I just love the fact that the show can be so silly one second, and then come back down with a genuinely emotional "johnny died". I was welling up...

I didn't even know there was a new series until 3 minutes before it aired. There was a lot to enjoy in that, and I may try to follow it this series rather than just watching random repeats out of sequence.

Her that plays Janet plays the Paul McGann Doctor's companion in radio/CD episodes which I should get round to trying sometime.
