Yay! MediaGuardian reports that the annoying Trident chewing gum ads with the guy in the comedy club have been banned.

500 people played the racism card, "offended by what they saw as the 'negative stereotype of black or Caribbean people and their culture'". Seemingly, black/Caribbeans don't all think that rants about chewing gum are appropriate routines for a comedy routine (it's funny because it's chew?). And they don't all turn to frantic proselytizing when introduced to a slightly less dull brand of gum. (Actually, I don't know exactly what part of Caribbean culture was allegedly being ridiculed, other than Talking Like On A Lilt Ad, and I'm probably focusing on the wrong part of the ad).

Sensibly, ASA didn't uphold bonkers complaints that it was insensitive to use the name of the Metropolitan Police's "black-on-black" gun crime initiative, pointing out that the Trident brand has existed for 40 years.

I should point out that the various varieties of Trident are actually quite good. I had tried them before I saw the crappy adverts, and liked them enough not to impose a knee-jerk ban. Boycotts are much easier when you don't like the product anyway.

Current active boycotts:
H&M (still not forgiven for making me sit through that Romeo & Juliet thing all those years ago).
Any "Product Of The Year" that infers in advertising that it is the only Product Of The Year, rather than being the winner in one of 32 categories.

And yes, anything I boycott is entirely based on pedantry and personal annoyance, rather than the actions of bottling companies in foreign parts using the same brand as a separate company which sells things in the UK.

As a general rule, if you have room in your jeans advert for a second song, it's too long. Jeans adverts should just have enough of a song for people buying the single to be mildly disappointed by everything that follows the 30 second mark. (eg Spaceman, Inside).

As a secondary rule, if Romeo gets gunned down in a drive-by shooting, and Juliet subsequently gets shot by a policeman for picking up his phone, it's not Romeo & Juliet.

Apparently the songs are from Dreamgirls, which I now have a reason not to watch.

I think this is a shortened version:

This is a summary from Wikipedia:
"Featuring Tamyra Gray as Juliet, Gus Carr as Romeo, and Mary J. Blige, this is a 10-minute promotional advertisement for the H&M clothing company. Released in September 2005, this commercial was shown online (H&M website) and during the trailers of certain theatrical films, and featured the new "&denim" selection. In this musical remake which features background music provided by Tamyra Gray and Mary J. Blige (both songs are from the musical Dreamgirls), Romeo is gunned down in a drive-by shooting and Juliet sings over his body while he bleeds to death on the street. Due to complaints that the commercial glamorized gang violence and was H&M's attempt to use gun culture to sell their jeans to teenagers, H&M subsequently withdrew the ad from Canadian & U.S. markets and issued an apology."

And this is an example of someone not liking it:

Displaying my odd ability to find some silver lining in a cloud, I searched for the adverts in question. I found them, they were shit, but more importantly at the same time I discovered a music video in which the 3 foxy Romanian girls singing inexplicably get naked.

Go net skillz.

The Madonna H&M advert is a further crime. The boycott continues....
